A power-drill with a powerful hammer-action for drilling concrete and masonry, use the masonry bits only. If you have a dual use drill where you can turn off the hammer option high speed drill bits can be used also. Versions with SDS chucks often have the most powerful action for drilling into masonry.
When to use a Hammer drill
Use a hammer drill when you need to drill a hole through brick, blockwork or concrete. The hammer action will break up the material as you drill and make it easier to remove once you’ve finished.
How to use a Hammer drill
- Hold the tool firmly in one hand while pressing down on the trigger with your other hand. The trigger should be held down throughout the drilling process to keep the bit turning at maximum speed and prevent it from becoming jammed in the hole.
- Press down on the top of the handle and push it into the material being drilled until it’s flush with its opening and begin drilling into it by rotating your wrist backwards and forwards until you hit resistance (this is how much material you need to remove). Make sure that you don’t push too hard otherwise you could damage your hammer drill by bending its shaft or breaking its gearbox).
